Proving grounds

Here's a quick one to make up for missing last Saturday.

Setting an arbitrary age of majority has cost us the advantages of having some sort of rite of passage.

The closest thing we have is getting a driver's liscence, and that hardly counts since its not especially difficult, and not everyone needs to go through the process.

I think that granting the privledges of adulthood to an individual after he/she has undergone some challenge to prove to the rest of the community that he/she possesses the grit and strength of character to provide for their tribe along with the rest of the adults is a bit of valuable ritual that might be more beneficial than simply awarding the priveleges of adulthood upon completion of some arbitrary length of existence.

I wonder if there is some way to gain the advantages of something like proving grounds in modern society...
